How to Use a Spectrophotometer to Measure the Color Consistency of Plastics?

August 29, 2025Benchtop Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, Portable Spectrophotometersuper

In the plastics industry, color consistency plays a crucial role in quality control. Whether producing packaging films, automotive parts, or consumer goods, customers expect precise and uniform colors across batches. Even minor variations in color can lead to rework, waste, or even loss of customer trust. A spectrophotometer provides the objective, repeatable data needed to control color effectively throughout production.

A spectrophotometer measures how a plastic surface reflects or transmits light across the visible spectrum. Unlike human eyes, which are subjective and easily influenced by lighting, fatigue, or gloss, a spectrophotometer delivers accurate, numerical color values.

Step 1: Preparing the Sample

Plastic samples can be measured as plaques, pellets, or finished parts. For accurate results, samples should be free from dust, scratches, or uneven thickness. In the case of films or transparent plastics, measurements may also include transmission values to assess both clarity and color.

Step 2: Calibrating the Instrument

Before use, calibrate the spectrophotometer with certified white and black standards. Regular calibration ensures stable and accurate readings, eliminating errors caused by instrument drift or environmental conditions.

Step 3: Measuring the Plastic Color

Position the spectrophotometer against the plastic surface and take a reading. The instrument records the spectral data and converts it into CIE Lab* values:

โ€ข L* โ€“ Lightness
โ€ข a* โ€“ Green (โ€“) to Red (+)
โ€ข b* โ€“ Blue (โ€“) to Yellow (+)

These values provide a precise โ€œcolor dataโ€ of the plastic sample.

Step 4: Comparing Against Standards

If you have a target or โ€œmasterโ€ standard, the spectrophotometer can compare the new sample against it and calculate the color difference (ฮ”E). A low ฮ”E value โ‰ค 1.0 to 2.0 means the color closely matches the standard, while a high ฮ”E indicates inconsistency.

Step 5: Maintaining Consistency

Routine checks during compounding, extrusion, or molding enable manufacturers to detect color shifts in raw materials or processing conditions early. Adjustments can then be made to ensure every batch remains within tolerance.

By integrating spectrophotometers into quality control workflows, plastic manufacturers reduce waste, maintain customer confidence, and deliver consistent products every time.
